1) After at least several hundred thousand years of remaining within a constant range, the amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere, started to rise with the advent of the Industrial Revolution. It has increased by almost 40% and is rising each year. This is certain and straightforward.

2) One of the properties of CO2 is that it creates a greenhouse effect and, all other things being equal, an increase in its concentration in the atmosphere causes the Earth’s temperature to rise. This is just physics. (The amount of other greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, such as methane, has also risen steeply since industrialization, which has added to the impact of higher CO2 levels.)

3) Several other factors, like changes in solar output, have major influences on climate over millennia, but these effects have been observed and measured. They alone cannot explain the rise in the global temperature over the past 50 years.

4) The uncertainties arise when it comes to the interaction between greenhouse gases and other factors in the complicated climate system. It is impossible to be sure exactly how quickly or how much the temperature will rise. But, the past can be measured. The temperature has indeed steadily risen over the past century while greenhouse gas levels have increased. But the forecasts still range very widely for what will happen in the future, ranging from a small but still potentially harmful rise of 1 to 2 degrees Fahrenheit to a potentially disastrous level of +6 to +10 degrees Fahrenheit within this century. A warmer atmosphere melts glaciers and ice sheets, and causes global sea levels to rise. A warmer atmosphere also contains more energy and holds more water, changing the global occurrences of storms, floods, and other extreme weather events.

5) Skeptics argue that this wide range of uncertainty about future temperature changes lowers the need to act: “Why spend money when you’re not certain?” But since the penalties can rise at an accelerating rate at the tail, a wider range implies a greater risk (and a greater expected value of the costs.) This is logically and mathematically rigorous and yet is still argued.

6) Pascal asks the question: What is the expected value of a very small chance of an infinite loss? And, he answers, “Infinite.” In this example, what is the cost of lowering CO2 output and having the long-term effect of increasing CO2 turn out to be nominal? The cost appears to be equal to foregoing, once in your life, six months’ to one year’s global growth – 2% to 4% or less. The benefits, even with no warming, include: energy independence from the Middle East; more jobs, since wind and solar power and increased efficiency are more labor-intensive than another coal-fired power plant; less pollution of streams and air; and an early leadership role for the U.S. in industries that will inevitably become important. Conversely, what are the costs of not acting on prevention when the results turn out to be serious: costs that may dwarf those for prevention; and probable political destabilization from droughts, famine, mass migrations, and even war. And, to Pascal’s real point, what might be the cost at the very extreme end of the distribution: definitely life changing, possibly life threatening.

7) The biggest cost of all from global warming is likely to be the accumulated loss of biodiversity. This features nowhere in economic cost-benefit analysis because, not surprisingly, it is hard to put a price on that which is priceless.

8.) A special word on the right-leaning think tanks: As libertarians, they abhor the need for government spending or even governmental leadership, which in their opinion is best left to private enterprise. In general, this may be an excellent idea. But global warming is a classic tragedy of the commons – seeking your own individual advantage, for once, does not lead to the common good, and the problem desperately needs government leadership and regulation. Sensing this, these think tanks have allowed their drive for desirable policy to trump science. Not a good idea.

9) Also, I should make a brief note to my own group – die hard contrarians. Dear fellow contrarians, I know the majority is usually wrong in the behavioral jungle of the stock market. And Heaven knows I have seen the soft scientists who lead finance theory attempt to bully their way to a uniform acceptance of the bankrupt theory of rational expectations and market efficiency. But climate warming involves hard science. The two most prestigious bastions of hard science are the National Academy in the U.S. and the Royal Society in the U.K., to which Isaac Newton and the rest of that huge 18th century cohort of brilliant scientists belonged. The presidents of both societies wrote a note recently, emphasizing the seriousness of the climate problem and that it was man made. Both societies have also made full reports on behalf of their membership stating the same. Do we believe the whole elite of science is in a conspiracy? At some point in the development of a scientific truth, contrarians risk becoming flat earthers.

10) Conspiracy theorists claim to believe that global warming is a carefully constructed hoax driven by scientists desperate for … what? Being needled by nonscientific newspaper reports, by blogs, and by right-wing politicians and think tanks? Most hard scientists hate themselves or their colleagues for being in the news. Being a climate scientist spokesman has already become a hindrance to an academic career, including tenure. I have a much simpler but plausible “conspiracy theory”: that fossil energy companies, driven by the need to protect hundreds of billions of dollars of profits, encourage obfuscation of the inconvenient scientific results.

11) Why are we arguing the issue? Challenging vested interests as powerful as the oil and coal lobbies was never going to be easy. Scientists are not naturally aggressive defenders of arguments. In short, they are conservatives by training: never, ever risk overstating your ideas. The skeptics are far, far more determined and expert propagandists to boot. They are also well funded. That smoking caused cancer was obfuscated deliberately and effectively for 20 years at a cost of hundreds of thousands of extra deaths. We know that for certain now, yet those who caused this fatal delay have never been held accountable. The profits of the oil and coal industry make tobacco’s resources look like a rounding error. In some notable cases, the obfuscators of global warming actually use the same “experts” as the tobacco industry did! The obfuscators’ simple and direct motivation – making money in the near term, which anyone can relate to – combined with their resources and, as it turns out, propaganda talents, have meant that we are arguing the science long after it has been nailed down. I, for one, admire them for their P.R. skills, while wondering, as always: “Have they no grandchildren?”

12) Almost no one wants to change. The long-established status quo is very comfortable, and we are used to its deficiencies. But for this problem we must change. This is never easy.

13) Almost everyone wants to hear good news. They want to believe that dangerous global warming is a hoax. They, therefore, desperately want to believe the skeptics. This is a problem for all of us.

Postscript
Global warming will be the most important investment issue for the foreseeable future. But how to make money around this issue in the next few years is not yet clear to us. In a fast-moving field rife with treacherous politics, there will be many failures. Marketing a “climate” fund would be much easier than outperforming with it.

Utah Defeats California in the Finals of 16-Team Collegiate Championships at Columbus Crew Stadium in Columbus, Ohio

COLUMBUS, Ohio, June 6 /PRNewswire/ — The University of Utah defeated rugby powerhouse California 31-26 in overtime to win the first-ever USA 7′s Rugby Collegiate Championship Invitational, which featured the top 16 teams in collegiate 7′s rugby. The Utes and Golden Bears met in the finals of the three-day, 38 match event held at Columbus Crew Stadium. The USA 7′s Rugby Collegiate Invitational was broadcast on NBC and Universal Sports on Saturday and Sunday.

“This was an historic weekend for introducing USA 7′s Rugby to a national audience,” said Dan Lyle, tournament director, USA 7′s. “We want to congratulate the Utah Utes and all the hard-working teams that competed in the tournament. We are thrilled at the success of this event and thankful for world-class partners led by NBC for helping raise the profile of USA 7′s Rugby through the 2016 Olympics and beyond.”

“We are honored to broadcast college Rugby 7′s on network television for the first time in history,” said Jon Miller, executive vice president, NBC Sports. “Rugby 7′s is a fast-paced sport that is tailor-made for TV. We are excited to share Rugby 7′s with a new audience and help the sport grow in the US.”

Saving the best for last, the championship game was the most exciting of the tournament. Cal was trailing 26-21 when senior Keegan Engelbrecht touched down for a try with no time remaining. Engelbrecht missed the conversion to send the game into sudden death overtime.

In overtime, Utah freshman Don Pati scored the winning try to claim victory over a Cal team that just last month won its 25th out of a possible 31 Rugby 15′s National Championship.

Utah’s run through the tournament saw them turn in victories over Penn State, Ohio State, Bowling Green, Navy and San Diego State. Entering the final match, Cal had outscored its opponents 157-7.

“We came into the tournament really believing in ourselves and confident that we could win the whole thing,” said Utah freshman Don Pati, who scored the winning try in sudden death overtime to give the Utes at 31-26 win. “When I broke the line for that try, it was an indescribable feeling.”

“The game was all about us sticking to our system and letting our athletes go out and play rugby,” said Utah head coach Jason Pye. “Obviously, we have some very good rugby players.”

The USA 7′s Rugby Collegiate Championship Invitational featured 16 Division I collegiate traditional powers, including the University of Arizona, Arizona State University, Army, Bowling Green, University of California at Berkeley, Dartmouth, University of Florida, Harvard, Indiana University, Navy, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Penn State, San Diego State, University of Tennessee, and the University of Utah.

Sponsors for the USA 7′s Rugby Collegiate Championship Invitational, included Subway, Geico, Bud Light and Toyota.

Branding and Expected Name Change

To better reflect the truly diversified nature of Zuma Beach as a publicly traded Management and Holding Company with portfolio companies operating in various sectors of the economy, we are planning to affect a corporate name change from “Zuma Beach Entertainment” to “Zuma Beach Management”. The official name change is expected to go into effect by the forth quarter of 2010. We will be providing additional information regarding the name change as the administrative process is undertaken.

Strategically, the corporate business plan is still very much committed to our entertainment holdings in digital content, online gaming, mobile and advertising. However, our long established information services and business-to-business service divisions (www.fnin.com, www.exchangemall.com, www.salesride.com, www.fastinfo1.com) have also grown significantly in the past year. Moreover we have 77 accompanying white-label business and new market vertical URLs expected to come online in subsequent quarters. The proposed name change will more appropriately describe our diversified holdings.

Zuma Beach Entertainment Division

Concurrently we are in the final stages of adding another phenomenal asset to our Entertainment division: G.I. Germ Fighters. G.I. Germ Fighters is a late-stage yet pre-commercialization online gaming environment and retail toy product line which can be seen on our website here: http://zumanation.biz/our-companies/gi-germ-fighters/. Details of the acquisition and commercialization plan will be disseminated in the subsequent weeks via press releases and the corporate web site.

Corporate Office Move

As of January 2010, our corporate offices have moved from the downtown retail district of Burbank, to the Commercial office park district directly adjacent to the Burbank Airport. A financial benefit of the move, we have reduced our overhead by 22% while increasing our usable office space by 1200 square feet. Extra financial benefits of the move include additional available parking, more convenient access to the freeways and the Bob Hope Burbank Airport as well as enhanced employee moral and corporate culture. Overall, the new location provides us ample room to grow, is more conducive to business and cut overhead considerably.

Corporately, we have turned a new leaf. We are excited by the outlook and expect to be sharing additional positive financial news as we reach additional key revenue generating milestones in the each of the coming quarters. As our valued owners, thank you again for your fortitude and support. As your elected CEO, I am thoroughly cognizant of my fiduciary responsibilities and dedicated to driving shareholder value for you, our owners.

As always, we have an open door policy here. Please do not hesitate to visit with us if you are going to be in the area.

Sincerely,

Mark Savoy

RFID technology brings Guinness’ brand positioning in Ireland to the fore with a sporting world first that could dramatically affect how fans experience the game of rugby

In Issue 18 of Contagious Magazine’s Alive Inside, Emily Hare wrote a really interesting article about what Guinness (the famous Irish brewing company) is doing these days to enhance it’s brand image. According to Red Urban (one of Guinness’ global agencies) Guinness is becoming the sponsor that will revolutionarize the way viewers are experiencing rugby with the use of RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) Technology.

Originally the use of RFID in game play idea started out at Red Urban as a way to increase awareness of rugby among young guys, however by now the concept has developed into something so fundamental that it could change the way people view rugby games. So what does RFID do for rugby and its viewers? First let’s start with how RFID works and what it’s useful for. RFID is a wireless tracking technology that consists of two components: the RFID tag and the RFID reader. The idea behind RFID is to be able to attach a tag to an object and be able to read it’s content or become aware of its presence wirelessly. So far the technology is mostly used by companies such as Wal-Mart to inventorying products efficiently by having a truck drive past a reading station and picking up the RFID tag signals, instead of manually counting items. The technology’s true genius as far as retailers are concerned is the lack of need to provide batteries with the tags since the readers are capable of passing on enough energy wirelessly to get a response from the previously powerless devices.

When it comes to Guinness and rugby however the RFID tags and readers used are way more sophisticated. The end result is a handful of tags on every player and one in the ball, plus a grid of readers placed throughout the field perimeter. The end result is game play tracking capabilities that were previously unavailable even to coaches, but now thanks go Guinness, Red Urban, and Nuremberg’s Farunhofer Institute (inventors of the MP3 media format) data streams containing information about the position and velocity of the various tags will soon become available to any media outlet. So essentially anyone who wants to analyze and represent extracts of the data may do so by subscribing to the feed which is provided by Guinness.

As far as viewers of the game are considered the use of RFID technology in rugby games means that gameplay and replays can be annotated with ball and player speed, and various hard to call situations which are even hard to observe with the video referee will now become easier to analyze and judge fairly. In addition gameplay can be abstracted and tactical situations and strategy analyzed in greater detail.

Assuming that accuracy and reliabilitywon’t be a serious hurdleduring the implementation phase (i.e. equipment failing or not working on rainy or cold days) the RFID technology is sure to become a valuable user experience enhancing technology and a great analysys tool for coaches.
